URA + SofIA: Lesson URA and SofIA assistants
Resource · not gradedGoal of the lesson
I can greet people and say goodbye, formally and informally.
Puedo saludar y despedirme de manera formal e informal.
The URA has the explanation, audio, examples by career and the Cultural Corner of the I PAC. Take notes: you will use them in the forum.
Formal and informal greetings
Use Good morning / afternoon / evening in formal situations. Use Hi / Hey with friends. Good night is only for saying goodbye.
| Formal | Informal | |
|---|---|---|
| Hello | Good morning. / Good afternoon. | Hi! / Hey! |
| How are you? | How are you today? | How's it going? |
| Goodbye | Goodbye. Have a nice day. | Bye! See you later. |
- Good morning, Professor Reyes.
- Hi, Ana! How's it going?
- Goodbye. Have a nice day.
En español
«Good night» es para despedirse en la noche, no para saludar. Para saludar en la noche: «Good evening».
How do you feel?
«How are you?» needs a real answer. At A1 you can say how you feel with one adjective.
I'm + feeling: fine, great, tired, busy, nervous, happy. Ask back: And you?
- How are you? — I'm fine, thanks. And you?
- I'm a little tired today.
- I'm nervous about my exam.
- I'm busy, but I'm happy.
En español
Para decir cómo te sientes: «I'm tired» (estoy cansado/a). No digas «I have tired».

Cultural competency: I can say what Lunar New Year is (Saturday, February 6), use Formal and informal greetings to talk about it, and compare it with Honduras.
Language bridge · plurilingual and intercultural
Use every language you know to learn English, and use English to understand other people.
«Buenas noches» can greet, but Good night only says goodbye. To greet at night: Good evening.
Formal / informal: Bonjour / Salut (FR) · Bom dia / Oi (PT) · Buongiorno / Ciao (IT) · Guten Morgen / Hallo (DE).
Among friends in Honduras people often greet with a hug or a kiss on the cheek; in many U.S. workplaces a handshake or a wave is more common. What do you do at your faculty? Say «In my experience…».
A visitor asks how to greet your professor. Tell them, in English, which greeting to use and why.
Your languages count: ask at home or in your community how to say it in Garífuna, Miskitu, the English of the Bay Islands or any other language you know, and add it to your glossary. Add it to «My languages» in your Passport →
